Safeguarding an appliance.

I need a solution

Hi All,

What is the best procedure for safeguarding an appliance? I realize that the internal boot disk uses a RAID configuration but what is the best way to safeguard against someone typing rm -r * in the / directory of the appliance.

Would it just be a re-image?

Can I backup the internal disk to anywhere?

I know that the catalogie is safe internally on its own section of disk.

I have looked in the documentation and couldn't find anything in detail. Just wondered what everyone else is doing out there? If there is a procedure written somewhere?

Kind Regards,

Leo.

Re-IP of a currently working master/media appliance?

$

I need a solution

Hi,

NB5230 + 1 disk shelf, v2.5.3 aka v7.5.0.2, master/media, adv. disk and MSDP - no other attached storage.

The master/media appliance that I want to re-IP does not perform any client backups, has no other media servers, and is purely an AIR target (i.e. its only function is to pull/import from another master appliance of same spec and version).

Appliance currently has only two IP addresses - one for IPMI and one for bonded eth0/1/2/3 - i.e. eth0 has not been kept as a third management IP address.

The name is not changing - neither the short name, nor is the FQHN.

I'm comfortable with the process and commands for changing the IPMI and bonded eth0/1/2/3 addresses - so I'm not after the CLIsh commands, or a detailed breakdown on the process.

So, assuming LAN infrastructure has been configured correctly - then, apart from checking/updating hosts file entries, and/or getting DNS updated, and flushing (bpclntcmd -clear_host_cache) on anything that might attempt to reach this master/media - can anyone suggest other issues that I might run in to ?

There is also an OpsCenter server that knows about both master servers - so additional comments around are this also welcome.

Thanks,

Dave.

System partition low on space

I need a solution

Hi all,

I have an appliance 5220, which is alerting me that the system partition(?) is running low on space and only has 16% free space available

I've had a look around and it seems the /tmp directory is at fault, using 55gb.  I've cleared infile*, outfile*, errfile* and *.log files using a procedure I have, but it made little difference.

The culprit appears to be these directories, which take 256mb each

256M    ./nbtelemetry_201406230416bix/DATA/nbappliance-hdwr/1/otherfiles
256M    ./nbtelemetry_201406230416bix/DATA/nbappliance-hdwr/1
256M    ./nbtelemetry_201406230416bix/DATA/nbappliance-hdwr
256M    ./nbtelemetry_201406230416bix/DATA
256M    ./nbtelemetry_201406230416bix
256M    ./nbtelemetry_201406260515dqN/DATA/nbappliance-hdwr/1/otherfiles
256M    ./nbtelemetry_201406260515dqN/DATA/nbappliance-hdwr/1
256M    ./nbtelemetry_201406260515dqN/DATA/nbappliance-hdwr
256M    ./nbtelemetry_201406260515dqN/DATA
256M    ./nbtelemetry_201406260515dqN
(there are many of these folder sets)

can anyone suggest if they should be removed using a specific method, or if they can simply be deleted?  and if I can stop them being generated?

thanks in advance

I need a solution

Hallo,

What are the command options for nbfdrv64,when using san-clients?

I need a solution

After  san-client is enabled on NBU5220, NBU5220 works as a FT media sever, we can see the FT processes as below:

nbu52201:/ # bpps -x|grep nbf
root     13016     1  0 21:22 ?            00:00:05 /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/nbftsrvr
root     13043 13016  3 21:22 ?        00:00:24 /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/nbfdrv64 -m=0xfc08002 -v=3 -s=256K -p=20

What are the  command options here for nbfdrv64?

-m=0xfc08002    stands for what?

-v=3                    stands for what?

-s=256K             stands for SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS_FT?

-p=20                 stands for FT-Pipes (FT Connections)?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I tried to change "Maximum concurrent FT connections" to 16 using NBU Java GUI concole, in Media server host properties,

and then restarted th NBU processes, but nbfdrv64's command option for -p is still 20. Should I use nbftadm to change this?

How do I know the current FT configuration?

Thanks...

When too much process on appliance, randomly some of database backup fails at the middle of process

I need a solution

Hello,

Firstly, this is a big company, nearly 20-25 TB data is backedup as weekly full backup. I think the problem occurs when i have duplication and backup processes at the same time. Randomly some db backup fails with 6 errors at the middle of job. Sometimes i make rebase is off and these errors are lower than to rebaseon. After a fail, i retry to job and it mostly finishes successfully. i dont exactly know which logs are needed. i try to explain my envoirement.

Master -> 7.5.0.7, windows 2008r2

Media -> 5220 appliance, 2.5.4

Clients -> windows 2008r2, sql2008

i found some link about the issue, but i dont know exactly these changes work or not.

Compelling reason not to include eth0 in bond0 on NB5230 v2.6.0.1?

Hi,

Is anyone aware of a compelling reason why we should not include eth0 in an 802.3ad bond0 (of 4 x 1Gb eth0/1/2/3) on an NB5230 master/media running v2.6.0.1?

Is it officially supported in v2.6.0.1, and also in v2.6.0.2, and going forward long term?

Thanks.

NetBackup KMS when appliance is master/media?

$

I need a solution

Hi,

Master/media NB5230 v2.6.0.1, and FC to LTO6 drives in HP MSL 2024.

I know how to setup and configure NetBackup KMS.  At this point in time I'm not interested in MSEO.

The Appliance v2.6.0.1 Admin Guide, on page 106, says:

"The NetBackup appliance supports writing to the tape devices that are capable of SCSI T10 encryption to ensure that the tape media that is moved off-site is secure. Tape encryption requires configuration the NetBackup Key Management Service (KMS) feature.
Note: The KMS feature is supported when the appliance is configured as a media server only in a NetBackup domain. A NetBackup master server appliance cannot administrate KMS. A non-appliance master server is required to administrate KMS with the devices that are connected to a NetBackup appliance."

Obviously it is quite clear that:

- NetBackup KMS on appliance master            not supported   (because it cannot see tape drives)

- NetBackup KMS on appliance media             supported         (because it can see tape drives)

But, can I infer that this is true:

- NetBackup KMS on appliance master/media  supported       (because it can see tape drives)

...because the appliance (although acting as a master server) is also acting as a media server.

However, this would conflict with '...is supported when the appliance is configured as a media server only...'

And here grammar can get in the way - is NetBackup KMS supported on media appliances 'only' when in a NetBackup domain?  If so, then is NetBackup KMS supported on master/media servers because the media server function is a member of a NetBackup domain, i.e. the master function on the same appliance?

I wish the document made a statement regarding appliances that are 'master/media'.

Thanks.

How to add Windows Client packages to fresh NB5220 v2.6.0.1?

I need a solution

Have just installed a virtual NB5220 from v2.6.0.1 ISO.  Configured as master.  All seems ok.

Opened browser to WebAdmin GUI, but Windows client kit is not available for download from master.

How do I make a Windows Client available for download from the appliance?

I guess I'm after something a bit like the v2.6.0.2 Windows Client addon package named:

     SYMC_NBAPP_addon_nbwin-7.6.0.2-SLES11.x86_64.rpm

...but I obviously need the v2.6.0.1 equivalent.

Any ideas?

Is it correct to infer that Appliance v2.6.0.2 no longer supports vSphere ESX v4.1?

I need a solution

Just sharing something that a partner pointed out to me the other day, which I did add it as a potential answer to question in the main forum - but I think it's worth re-iterating and seeking clarification here...

Page 15 of the NetBackup VMware compatibility doc:
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH64542
...says that v7.6.0.2 (and v7.6.0.1 with EEB EEB3318872) was built with VDDK 5.5.

The VDDK 5.5 Release Notes:
https://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vddk/vddk-550-releasenotes.html
...doesn't list support for anything below vSphere v5.0U3.

And this is where I make the assumption that VADP is built using VDDK - and so this implies that neither NetBackup v7.6.0.2 nor Appliance v2.6.0.2 will work with vSphere ESX 4.x hosts (and nor NetBackup v7.6.0.1 with EEB3318872 and nor Appliance v2.6.0.1 with EEB3318872).  Are both the assumption and the inference correct?

FYI - Re EEB3318872 referenced above, there is more detail (and a workaround) here:

Running a 5220 with 7.5.0.6. I'm using SLP's to replictate to a Master appliance at our DR site and to duplicate to tape, going to IBM.ULTRIUM-TD6 tape drives. Starting last week my dupliction jobs are running slow and showing records below in the job log. Not sure where else to look to troubleshoot.

Using the 5230 Migration Utility to migrate PureDisk data to MSDP

$

I need a solution

Hi all,

Need to migrate data off a legacy PureDisk system into 5230 and I need some clarification on the process.

HOWTO89017 states "NetBackup cannot use the storage hardware while PureDisk uses it for storage. The structure of the PureDisk storage is different than the structure of the storage for integrated NetBackup deduplication. The disk systems cannot be used simultaneously by both NetBackup and PureDisk. The PureDisk images on the storage cannot be transferred to the deduplication storage server storage. Therefore, to migrate from NetBackup PureDisk to the NetBackup Media Server Deduplication Option, Symantec recommends that you age the PureDisk storage pool backups until they expire".

HOWTO - http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO89017

I've read about the migration utility on the 5230 appliance that can apparently migrate data from PureDisk to MSDP (just not over fibre channel).

Has anyone successfully used the migration utility to migrate data off PureDisk to an MSDP or using any other method?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

AIR behavior with Bandwidth Throttle in place

I need a solution

I have a setup with AIR on two different 5220 Appliances.  The network between the two locations is only 100Mb for everything.  Netbackup replication wants the full pipe but the users say different.  We are using bandwidthlimit in the agent.cfg file to use 50% or less of the total pipe.  The behavior we are seeing in the activity monitor shows all replication jobs hit 100% but do not complete for many hours after it hits 100%.   My thoughts on this is that source master is staging the replication backups and the progress in the activity monitor reports on this portion.  With 50% of a 100Mb pipe, the replications will take many hours to move the data to the remote master, we are thinking the job completes when the transfer completes the replication process to the remote master.  Is this normal behavior and is our thought process even close to what really happens?  All searches have come up empty for an explanation of this behavior.

syslog redirection from NBU appliance

Hi All,

Has anyone ever redirected syslog to an external collecter on Netbackup Appliances. I have seen that in the /etc/sysconfig/syslog.conf file that you can put in an external IP address but I wondered if this was the correct way of doing it or is there something else I should be looking at?

We have tried to configure but we are not getting the syslog message through to the external server.

Huge buffer delays

I need a solution

Hello

I've been reading up on a few similar cases like https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/slow-backups-after-upgrading-7503 and https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/netbackup-data-consumer-waiting-full-buffer-delayed-2186355-times and many others but there doesn't seem to be a solid solution from Symantec.

For us, it started happening shortly after installing new Media appliances (Symantec 5230)

We're running:

Symantec Netbackup 7.5.0.7 on Windows Server 2008 R2 x64

Symantec Appliance 5230 2.5.4 with 4GBIT LAN and LTO5 drivers connected via fiber

Backup jobs are not THAT affected:

Info bptm(pid=14572) waited for full buffer 318 times, delayed 505 times

Info bptm(pid=5678) waited for full buffer 2388 times, delayed 3075 times

It's really when you get into duplication to tape that it gets incredibly slow:

Info bptm(pid=16544) waited for full buffer 17723 times, delayed 51251 times

Info bptm(pid=710) waited for full buffer 18813 times, delayed 57167 times

Info bptm(pid=18885) waited for full buffer 41759 times, delayed 139268 times

Our buffer settings:

7/16/2014 2:00:29 AM - Info bptm(pid=32588) using 262144 data buffer size
7/16/2014 2:00:29 AM - Info bptm(pid=32588) using 128 data buffers

They used to be at 30 buffers, now with 128 I still get similar results... Here's a shot from the appliance settings:

16-07-14 11-47-07 AM.png

16-07-14 11-47-58 AM.png

Any other ideas that might help? I thought getting the appliances was a good idea but now... not so much!

Thanks

Mismatch in SLP information

The activity monitor and Ops Center Analytics are in agreement that all SLP's have completed all processing.  This data center and their remote data center are using Air between two 5220 Appliances to replicate hundreds of images daily.  When the commands nbstlutil -copy_incomplete and nbstlutil -image_incomplete is run on the source master it shows a response of 696 and 10 respectively.  When the same commands are run on the remote master, the response is128 13 respectively.  Why are the outputs from each server different from what the activity monitor and Ops Center Analytics say?
