Difference in SQL Database backup speed

*** Moved to new discussion from https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/duplication-tape-slow ***

Thanks for all the replies,

have another question, maybe you could help me on.

I ran a backup job on a SQL Database yesterday with no other jobs running and had a KB/Sec of 100,000, today with 40 other Backups/Replication/Duplication jobs running, the same job has a KB/SEc of 10,000. Is there a log I can look at to see what might be causing the difference in speed between today and yesterday?

So can a 5230 be a vtl?  We have a AS400 that can backup to VTL but is not natively support by netbackup.  Is there a way to make the appliance accept vtl type connection.  Or am I spinning my wheels and need to find another solution for the OS400.

Appliance call home failed

I need a solution

Can anyone advise to where and what address the call home on the Netbackup 5230 appliances goes too; it seems that the proxy that the appliance sits behind maybe blocking the call home functionality?

The test call home does work and reports back as sucessful, however over the weekend I received the following from one of my appliances: -

CALLHOME status: Not able to upload callhome data Error: 500 proxy connect
failed: PROXY ERROR HEADER, could be non-SSL URL: HTTP/1.1 504 Gateway Timeout
Proxy-Agent: IWSS Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8 Cache-Control:
no-cache Connection: close Date: Sat, 19 Jul 2014 10:19:33 GMT <HTML><TITLE>504
Gateway Timeout</TITLE> <H1>504 Gateway Timeout</H1> Gateway timeout expired
while waiting for server response</HTML> Please contact Symantec Support to
resolve this issue.

Node does not have any errors.

I have noted that the last line does state that no errors are present, however this does concern me that if there was an error that it may not be delivered to Symantec automatically.

Netbackup Appliance 5230 and Activity Monitor Access

I need a solution

We have a Netbackup Appliance 5230 running 2.6.0.2 as a master server.  We would like to give our operators access to the Activity Monitor by setting up user accounts and plan on using auth.conf to restrict certain things.  My question is do you guys normally create an account on the appliance and do you set restricted shell?(rbash)  We don't want the operators moving around directly on the appliance.  Also we need to give the operators the ability to change their own password.  Thanks.

Actual amount of Data transferred using SLP & AIR

I need a solution

I'm trying to find an easy way to report on the actual amount of data being transferred from one Netbackup 5220 appliance to another 5220 appliance using SLP & AIR.  Both appliances are running 7.6.0.2.  I wrote a script to look for the  "CR sent" field in the /usr/openv/netbackup/db/jobs/trylogs/ directory but as we implement Targeted AIR the script will have to be updated to accommodate the changes.  I could not find a report in OpsCenter that would give me this information.  Is the "CR sent" data logged somewhere other that the job logs that would make it easier to report on for any given timeframe?

Symantec Backup Appliance 5230

I need a solution

Hi,

I'm looking for some guidance/ technical assistance in implementing Symantec Backup Appliance 5230 within our backup environment.

Current configuration

Master Server: VM (RHEL 6)

Media Servers: Total of 4 physical media servers (2 in production and 2 in DR site)

Total Front End Terabyte (FETB): 80 Terabytes

Question #1:

If we replace all the physical media servers and replace it with Symantec Backup Appliance 5230, can we make do with two Backup Applince (Having one appliance in Production and the other in DR site)? Is this sufficient for us to be covered in a fail-over event (e.g. If the production backup appliance goes offline, how can the DR backup appliance be promoted as the Master server and how quickly can the fail-over happen)?

Also, if the production backup appliance goes offline and assuming that the DR site backup appliance resumes the role as the Master/Media server, can it still read data off the disk residing within production environment (assuming that the network connectivity is still available in prod)? Or is the storage on the backup appliance totally dependent on the appliance header to be online in order to function?

Question #2:

How much initial storage should we purchase/ allocate? Assuming that we need to protect an initial total of 80 TB of data. Is there a simple method on calculating/forecasting an approximation on the total storage require over a period of x number of years?

Any information/ guidance is much appreciated.

Thank you.

How often will Rebasing run on my 5220? is there a way to monitor other then crcontrol --rebasestate. I'm looking to see when it started and how far along it is in the process. Also can I be notified when it starts and stops? Maybe with opscenter?

I need a solution

I'm trying to re-image a NBU5220 appliance and I'm getting "Error while configuring partitions, Try again", this is is happening on the Create partition plans part.

Looks like this is related with a previously installed filesystems, partition tables, or old md metadata on the disk(s) I'm trying to ru the dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdx bs=1024k count=1 commnad to remove partition table and filesystems but for some reason the command prompt does not accept any command I'm trying to run.

Any idea ??

SLP Duplication from MSDP to MSDP

Good Day Geeks !

We are duplicating our remote backups to a central hub . We have netbackup appliances at local sites to which we are duplicating to MSDP pool which we created on one of our Linux boxes.

Now we have purchased aan appliance at central hub site and want to move all our remote backup duplications to appliance.

Now if i just put appliance storge unit in SLP duplication ,it will duplicate all the dta over the WAN which I am not looking for.

Any way I can seed the data from my old pure disk pool to appliance so when the duplications start ,it will only send meta data and the changed data over the wan.

Thanks,

Pranav Batra

sql job stream delay

I need a solution

Netbackup Appliance 5230, 2.6.0.2 acting as master with a windows 2008 media server for offsite tape duplication.  This is a new setup and on all of our sql agent backups there is a 5-7 minute delay between application jobs-streams starting.  For example the parent job starts then start child job for X database, that stream finishes and then another stream doesn't start for another 5-7 minutes to back up the second database and so on.  This happens on every stream.  We checked all settings and couldn't find anything, dbas checked and they don't have page verification set or anything like that.  We could add batch group size to start more than one database backup at a time but it doesn't explain the wait time.  This isn't occuring on any of our master servers.  We currently have a ticket opened with Symantec for this, has anyone expereinced this?  Thanks.

No ISO choice in boot menu

I need a solution

Hi,

I'm reimaging an NBU 5230 appliance and have the 2.6.0.1 ISO on a USB drive. I have put the USB into the back of the appliance but when the boot menu comes up (after an F6), it doesnt list a CDROM but just the USB drive, amongst the RAID controller and the EFI option.  I try to boot the USB anyway but it then tells me its an unrecognised filesystem and dumps me into the grub rescue prompt.

I download the ISO direct from fileconnect and when I check the ISO on a MAC or PC it looks fine.

Any ideas? Do I need to do something else to the ISO or anything in the boot menu of the appliance?

Geeks !

We have 4 appliances running on 7.6.0.2 ( 2.6.0.2). Now our master server on which we have to add these as media is on 7.5.0.6 and we cannot upgrade it for some time.

How do we roll back to 2.5.0.3 on these appliances.

Thanks,

Netbackup AIR Configuration

I need a solution

Hi Folks,

I implemented the AIR between my production and DR site. What i have done is listed below,

Production master server (Source) : Netbackup 7.6.0.2, Windows 2008

Production media server(Source) : Appliance 5230

DR master server(Target) : Netbackup 7.6.0.1, windows 2008

DR media server(Target) : Appliance 5220

Production and DR site connectivity band width is 100Mb/S (Not dedicated for backups)

Actually the DR Appliance is physically located in my production site and Replication is working smooth.

All the backup images are replicated from Production Appliance 5230 to DR Appliance 5220/

Now we are planning to move the DR Appliance 5220 to DR site physically. And the average incremental data is 1TB on daily basis.

And now my concern is how do i calculate the replication window, how much band width it will use ect things once i move Applinace 5220 physically to the DR site.
