NetBackup Appliance upgrade 2.6.0.3 did not take effect

Hello Support Team,

I recently upgraded my appliance version from 2.6.0.1 to version 2.6.0.3. However, the upgrade did not work. Before the upgrade I copied the image SYMC_NBAPP_update-2.6.0.3-1.x86_64.rpm into the appliance /inst/patch/incoming directory. I was able to view the image using the CLISH "list downloded" command. However, the upgrade completed successfully, but when I tried the check the appliance new version after upgrade I got the same old version displayed: 2.6.0.1

When I run the command upgradestatus, I got the output below:

"appliance version 2.6.0.1 is not in upgrade state"

Please I need help what could be wrong.

NB: This is a new set of appliances, and they need to be upgraded before going into production.

Upgrade from 2.5.04 to 2.6.0.2 - MSDP Conversion

I need a solution

I recently performed an upgrade to a 5230 appliance from 2.5.0.4 to 2.6.0.2. The appliance has a newly configured MSDP pool with nothing on it. Will a conversion actually run on that new pool? Or since it is new will it be skipped?

NetBackup Appliance v2.5.4 re-image failed

Hi Team,

Kindly assist, I recently re-image my NetBackup Appliance 5230 running v2.5.4. However, the re-imaging did not complete successfully. I got this two errors below while the re-imaging is still booting:

vxfs mount: vxfs: ERROR:V-321268: /dev/vx/dsk/nbuapp/pdvol is corrupted. needs checking

vxfs mount: vxfs: ERROR:V-321268: /dev/vx/dsk/nbuapp/catvol is corrupted. needs checking

And the final error below:

Welcome to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP4 (x86-64) - kernel 2.6.16.60-0.10.3.1 - smp (tty).

ERROR: Configuration of NetBackup Appliance Failed....

Please how do I correct this error.

AIR not happening for a client

Hello all

NBU 5200 Appliance Version: 2.5.1, Appliance Version: 2.5.1   2 appliances at same version.

scenario: i added a windows server CLIENT1(uppercase) to a test policy backup ran for 20 mins then I had to cancel it due to some other activity. then i added in another policy as client1(lower case), next day backup ran as per its schedule. backup completed but duplication fails. duplication step is via SLP. NBU 5200 to NBU 5200 replication. rest all back up images are replicated without any problem. only this one hav problem.

Hence first backup completed with a lower case name.

NBU GUI catalog shows 2 backup images dated 8th and 9th 

at path /disk/databases/catalog/2 i see folder client1 in lower case -- policy name folder --then .img, .info .hdr files

I'm getting vulnerability tickets from our threat team on our netbackup appliances.

IPMI 2.0 RAKP RMCP+ Authentication HMAC Password Hash Exposure

and

IPMI 2.0 Cipher Type Zero Authentication Bypass Vulnerability

What is my best path of resolution to these issues? Please advise.

Hi All,

 

I have master server on windows 2008 datacentre x64 and two 5230 Netbackup appliances.

Main Site : One windows master server and one Netbackup 5230 appliance as media server

DR site : One Netbackup 5230 appliace as media server.

 

I am configuring AIR between main site windows master server and DR site Netbackup Appliance 5230 as master server.

 

I have configured the aAIR as per standard configuration. I am facing an issue during replication. Please see the below replication job detail and help me. Thank you...

2.6.0.3 Security

I need a solution

I keep an account on my 5220 that I use with WinSCP when I need to grab logs and such.  I recently upgraded to 2.6.0.3 and noticed my account no longer works on WinSCP.  When I attempt to su to this account, I get USER NOT AUTHORIZED.  This doesn't happen on my 5220 that is still at 2.6.0.2.  What has Symantec done?

Exchange and EV backup dedupe ratio

Dear Experts,

We have two appliances(5230 with 7.6.0.3) and we are designing what backup data should go where. I am wondering if putting Exchange and EV backups will improove dedupe ratio as both data are email data.

Exchange 2010 and EV 10.0.3 with email and Journal archiving.

limitation of streams

NetBackup 5220/5230 Appliance is preconfigured with 8 streams in total for the appliance. In many cases this is not a limiting factor with the notable exception of Oracle backup where the number of streams can be very high.

 

I know that many factors and dependencies : from storage unit the maximum stream per drive is 2-32 can be configured for multi stream ,So how come if I used the Appliance ? max 8 streams

Netbackup Appliances MSDP pool Capacity

Hi All,

 

I need to know how do we calculate the required disk space for customers that how much cpacity of MSDP pool they needed to manage their backup environment. 

Actually I am facing difficulties with few customers, where MSDP pool is getting full. Now I wanted to analyze and setup SLPs with different retentions so that MSDP disk pool wont get full. Most of the customers requirement are to keep the first copy with 2 weeks retention on disk and then duplicate it to tape with AIR replication.

Kindly help me with any tool and calculated formula for MSDP pools on Symantec Appliances 5220, 5230.

NetBackup Appliance MSDP Dedupe ports not opened

Hi Support,

I recently configure client-side deduplication on netbackup appliance 5230 running appliance v2.6.0.3. However, the client-side deduplication fails with error code 83 "Clients direct plugin not available"

I got a technote that seems to provide the solution: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...

10102: The NetBackup Deduplication Manager(spad).

10082: The NetBackup Deduplication Engine(spoold).

However, when I confronted my network team to open the above ports, they said there is no firewall in place to prevent the ports from opening.

My question is, how can these ports be opened on clients (UNIX, Linux and Windows) or is there a place to open these ports on the appliance?

Also during the client-side dedupe configuration, the following were selected:

*Always use client-side deduplication

*MSDP pool was used for the deduplication

Kindly assist with possible solution to resolve this error.

Hi All,

Please I need an advise on the above title.

I have a large netbackup domain with dr remote location. I currently purchase some set of netbackup appliances and want to configure the auto-image replication between the production and dr site. Below are the setup in each location, kindly advise as per the above question.

Production:

1 nbu Master server (traditional)

3 nbu appliance (media server) with storage shelves attached

Dr site:

1 nbu Master server (traditional) same as above in Production

1 nbu appliance (media server) with storage shelves attached

Now I want to configure AIR between one of the appliance head (MSDP) in Production, to the appliance head (MSDP) in DR. The Production and DR appliance shared a single NBU domain, although in remote locations.

Question: Will the Auto-Imge-Replication configuration work? I have read in several Symantec technote that AIR must be between two NBU domains.

Please if the above question will work, kindly guide me thru the configuration, since both appliance in PROD and DR are configured as media servers.

HBA configuration is not saved after appliance reboot

Hi Support,

Please I need a solution on how I can make my hba cards configuration persistant upon appliance reboot.

I notice each time I reboot the appliance, all the hba cards return to the default mode, which is "initiator", whereas some were configured as "target" I have outline the steps I use to configure my hba cards below in case of any mistake.

Ojapp5230-02:/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd # nbftsrv_config -nbhba   (install hba driver)

Ojapp5230-02:/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd # ./nbhba -L       (all defaults to "initiator")

Ojapp5230-02:/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd # ./nbhba -modify -wwn 21:00:00:24:FF:53:9A:2E -mode target   (set some hba cards as "target")

Ojapp5230-02:/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd # ./nbhba -L     (verify changes)

Ojapp5230-02:/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd # nbftsrv_config  (updating configuration)

Ojapp5230-02.Support> reboot

NB: After reboot, I notice all the hba cards defaults to "initiator" and none is "target", please is there any way around these, because there will always be a reboot of the appliance during maintenance.

Change of management port after NBU appliance upgrade

Hi, recently I helped a customer to upgrade their NBU 5230 appliance to 2.6.0.3 (previously it is 2.5.4). The appliance was setup as master server. The onboard network port eth0 is the management port. After upgrade, we found that the management port is not accessible. We cannot ping the management IP address but we can still access the appliance via eth1 which was configured as production LAN last time. 

I would like to know:

Is this normal? If no, what happened here? If yes, does it mean the dedicated management port has been removed from the new release?

Can Netbackup Appliance (NBU5220) be used to backup app_cluster with virtual_name?

We have a 2-node vcs cluster, both installed as NBU san media sever.
db1 (NBU 6.5.4)

db2 (NBU 6.5.4)

NBU_master (7.6.0.3

nbu5220 (2.6.0.3)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I used nbemmcmd command to create a app_cluster: db-cluster 

nbemmcmd -addhost -machinename db-cluster  -machinetype app_cluster

nbemmcmd -updatehost -add_server_to_app_cluster -machinename DB1 -machinetype media -netbackupversion 6.5 -clustername db-cluster  -masterserver NBU_master

To use the virtual_name of app_cluster as the NBU client, a STU using virtual_name as media server needs to be created.

But, IF I want to use the MSDP pool of nbu5220 to backup the app_cluster with virtual_name, NO STU associated with  virtual_name can be created.

Is there any way to use Netbackup Appliance (NBU5220)  to backup app_cluster with virtual_name?

1)Transforming db1/db2 from san media servers to san clients, should be feasible? 

2) Since we still need to use the Tape Library, and don't want to make them san clients. Any other way?

Connecting additional Storage to Netbackup Appliance 5220.

I have a NBU appliance 5220 with two storage shelves with 35 TB each.

The version is 2.6.0.3

I am using 64 TB for MSDP and 11 TB as Advanced Disk.

 

With 2.6.0.3, the MSDP capacity has been increased to 144 TB.

instead of buying additional storage shelves, it is possible for me to add additional disk space from our 3par storage and increase my MSDP?

 

Please advise.

IPMI does not work

I need a solution

Hi, we are helping a customer to configure a NetApp 5230 appliance which is upgraded from 2.5.4 to 2.6.0.3. Previously we did not configure IPMI. After the upgrade, we decide to configure IPMI. However, I followed the guidelines in NetBackup doc but it does not work. I cannot ping the IPMI port no matter what IP address I set.

How to troubleshoot this? Thanks in advance.

Hi, recently we helped a customer to upgrade two NBU 5230 appliance from 2.5.4 to 2.6.0.3. Before the upgrade, the AIR between the two appliance (one in prod site and one in DR site) is working fine. However, after upgrade, we can see AIR job run in the appliance in prod site. However, we cannot see any import job in the appliance in the DR site. 

My quesiton is: do I need to reset the AIR after upgrade? If no, how to troubleshoot in this case. Thanks in advance.

Appliance 5230 HBA ports using initiater or target mode!!!

Hi All ,

I have the current case and need to clarify how right is the configuration:

I have an 5230 appliance as media server D model ,and initially  all HBA port coming with initiator mode to be used as tape out and vmwre host. I will configure some SAN client to be connected to this appliance (Or to be zoned) ,so for this I have to enable FT SAN client inside the appliance to work as target mode.and the other will still works as initiater.

The question is regarding vmware host : I still need to have vmware host in initiater mode to worked proporly Right !!! But I'm going to take backup for VM's using SAN mode first. and all images will be kept in the appliance not on the SAN storage. The confustion is here :

When I'm using SAN client (the data flow from SAN client to the appliance directly through SAN  Fabric and for this we configured the Appliance port as Target mode)  clear and logic .

But  for VMware Backup I see that we should have the same thing ( the data flow from the SAN storage(created snapshot ) to the Appliance  but we have to configure the appliance port as initiater.

Could you please help in this : why for vmware host I have to use initiater mode instead of Target mode?
